Are those with eczema more susceptible to swine flu a) because their skin barrier is impaired b) because some are on immunosuppressants?
Answer
This is an important question. Swine Flu or H1N1 virus is a type of flu which can in some instances be transmitted by transmitted by touch, particularly the eyes, nose and mouth. There is no evidence that it is transmitted through the skin or that individuals with an impaired skin barrier, such as those with eczema are at an increased risk of contracting the virus.
There is very little evidence in general to suggest that patients with eczema are more likely to contract flu type illness. However, if it is possible that patients with eczema who are taking immunosuppressive drugs may develop a more severe form of flu with possibly an increased chance of a secondary bacterial chest infection.
We would therefore recommend the H1N1 vaccine and the annul flu jab be given provided
these are not live. It is also sensible to watch out for a secondary bacterial chest
infection. If you discuss this with your family doctor a Pneumovax injection, to
protect against chest infections with Streptococcus pneumoniae, may be recommended.
Tamiflu , the antiviral used as treatment for swine flu was initially tested in adults
